UNIZIK partner Anambra State on Media literacy conference for Secondary schools

Media Literacy, A Road map to Proper Child Development

As part of activities geared towards sensitizing youths, especially students of secondary school in Anambra State on media literacy and the influence of media on children, the Department of Mass Communication in collaboration with International Cooperation and Linkages, NAU and in partnership with Anambra State Ministry of Education have organized a media literacy conference for public secondary schools in the State held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Auditorium recently.

The Vice-Chancellor Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS in his remark described the event as a welcome development aimed at creating awareness on the positive and negative impact of the media on children and adolescence.

The Vice-Chancellor represented by the Director, Academic Planning Prof. Odibo admonished the children to practice press freedom with utmost responsibility and their expression of opinion should be within the ambit of the law.

He advised the young adolescents to be mindful of their use of the social media. He commended the organizers of the conference and UNESCO for partnering with the University.

The Head Department of Mass Communication Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna, implored the young students to always shun all negative aspects of the social media that will mar their educational pursuits and hinder their future ambitions.

She encouraged them to be role models and good ambassadors of their families, the state and the country.

In a keynote lecture, Dr. Uche Ebeze also stressed that ethical code of conduct should be applied in press freedom and offensive language should be prohibited. Certificates of participation was issued to all participants.

The Chairman of the ceremony Dr Emmanuel C. Ojukwu had in an opening remark welcomed the students and thanked the organizers for the good work at educating the young ones on media literacy. He also thanked the coordinator of the programme Ms Ngozi Emmanuel for her determination and hardwork. The event had in attendance, the Director International Cooperation & Linkages Dr. Igwebuike Victor Onyiaorah, teachers, students from public secondary school in Anambra State, as well as gentlemen of the press.
